The Institute of Lighting Professionals
2021-2024
From September 2021 to December 2023, I led the design and production efforts for the Lighting Journal, a publication dedicated to the Institute of Lighting Professionals (ILP). Throughout this period, my role involved overseeing the entire process, where I successfully modernized the existing design. I introduced fresh layouts while ensuring adherence to the magazine's established style.
The Lighting Journal, a litho-printed, perfect-bound publication, consistently comprised an average of 68 pages. It featured a 200gsm gloss-coated cover and 100gsm silk-coated text pages. With a print run of 2,000 copies per issue, the magazine reached a national audience in the UK and was distributed across 20 countries worldwide. Additionally, each issue was made available digitally on a third-party platform.
The production cycle necessitated close collaboration on a flat plan with the editor and advertising sales manager. This collaborative effort aimed to ensure accurate pagination for both content and advertising. Given the magazine's regularity, a tight 27-hour turnaround time for the initial design underscored the need for efficiency. Throughout this process, meticulous attention to advertisers' requirements, including link-throughs on the digital version, was paramount to maximize return on investment.
My time working with the Lighting Journal showcased not only a commitment to design innovation but also a demonstration of strong organisational skills. These skills were crucial in maintaining a consistent meeting of deadlines, ensuring the smooth and timely delivery of each issue.
